Why I fight for the education of refugee girls (like me) | Mary Maker
After fleeing war-torn South Sudan as a child, Mary Maker found security and hope in the school at Kenya's Kakuma Refugee Camp. Now a teacher of young refugees herself, she sees education as an essential tool for rebuilding lives -- and empowering a generation of girls who are too often denied entrance into the classroom. "For the child of war, an education can turn their tears of loss into a passion for peace," Maker says. The way we think about immigration is flawed | Yoseph Ayele | TEDxAuckland
Born in Ethiopia, Yoseph Ayele was kicked out of the United States because his Harvard degree and entrepreneurial work did not satisfy US immigration requirements. He moved to New Zealand to design the Global Impact Visa - the first immigration policy in the world to select people on their potential to create a positive impact in society. This visa is run by the Edmund Hillary Fellowship (www.ehf.org) in a new model for taking a human-centric and entrepreneurial approach to doing immigration in the 21st century. Yoseph is co-founder and CEO of the Edmund Hillary Fellowship, a community of exceptional entrepreneurs and investors who are solving complex global problems from New Zealand. EHF is implementing the Global Impact Visa – the most entrepreneur-friendly visa in the world and the first to focus on impact. Born in Ethiopia, Yoseph has lived in six countries across four continents. Before moving to New Zealand, he helped grow Inflection, a successful technology startup in Silicon Valley. He studied entrepreneurship, leadership and social change at Harvard, Cambridge, and Victoria University of Wellington. He is passionate about regenerative agriculture, building cultural bridges, and community. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx

The Night That Changed Germany's Attitude To Refugees
A Night In Cologne: A series of sexual assaults perpetrated by immigrants on New Year's Eve in Cologne changed Germany's welcoming attitude to refugees and economic migrants. What happened and why was it hushed up? How has it changed the nation? Michelle describes how the assailants, supposedly refugees, "touched us everywhere they could, between the legs and at our breasts". Police and media initially downplayed the incident, but as days went by, Germans learned that more than 1000 complaints of sexual assault and theft had been lodged, with the alleged assailants being described as North African and Middle Eastern. Subsequently, the generosity that has seen Germany embrace more than a million new migrants in the past year, otherwise known as "Welcome Culture", is wearing thin. For Frauke Petry, head of the increasingly popular right wing Alternative Party for Germany, "it's time to wake up" to the way society is being changed by immigration. Left-wing feminist Alice Schwarzer fears that a "misguided tolerance" on race issues facilitated the violence, and the resultant backlash. "I am convinced", says Schwarzer, "that we have for the first time since 1945, a growing right wing movement." Asian brides for sale | 101 East
101 East investigates the dramatic increase in South Korean men marrying mail-order brides, up from almost none a decade ago, overturning centuries of prejudice against interracial marriage and creating a wave of cases of divorce and abuse. More than a third of South Korean men in rural areas married foreign brides last year. While some unions are happy, the industry has also led to sex trafficking, domestic violence and murder. Authorities are cracking down on illegal agency activities but the Korean government is facing calls to implement a stricter screening of interracial marriages.
